FM newsroom – professional cleaning, sanitation. As hygiene standards rise across commercial and public spaces, Italy is setting a new benchmark with a specialist course to train certified Sanitisation Process Managers, signalling a major shift in how facility management approaches cleanliness and safety.

A Professional Approach to Sanitisation

The pandemic reshaped our perspective on cleanliness, transforming ad hoc disinfection efforts into a strategic priority. This shift has created a demand for trained professionals who can manage sanitisation processes in workplaces, schools, and commercial environments.

To meet this need, Campus Biomedico University of Rome, in partnership with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, has launched the Advanced Training Course for Sanitation Process Managers—a first-of-its-kind programme aligning with the new UNI/PdR 173-2:2025 standard, as reported by the European Cleaning Journal.

What the Course Covers

Targeted at professionals with at least a high school diploma and one year of work experience, the three-month hybrid course covers five key areas:

  • Planning and launching sanitisation processes
  • Operational and quality management
  • Documentation and monitoring
  • Continuous improvement strategies
  • Team development in hygiene services

Participants also gain in-depth knowledge of regulations, advanced technologies, and how to coordinate with risk management teams (RSPP).

The course is designed for individuals who already hold an upper secondary school diploma or a three-year degree and have at least one year of work experience. Those who hold at least a three-year degree and complete the course will be awarded a specialist qualification of ‘Sanitisation Process Manager’.

What This Means for Facility Managers

For facility managers, this represents a practical path to improving in-house hygiene capabilities or a reason to recruit certified professionals. With rising expectations around cleanliness and compliance, the sanitisation manager is fast becoming a must-have role in modern facility operations.
