FM newsroom – Hospital Infrastructure, Facility Management, B+N. A major technical project was carried out recently at the Podmaniczky Street site of the North-Pest Centre Hospital – Honvéd Hospital. Under the full delivery and coordination of B+N Magyarország Kft. a new Baltimore cooling tower, weighing more than 4.7 tonnes, was installed in the mechanical plant area created on the rooftop level of Building “G”.
Replacing the cooling tower was of critical importance, as the unit forms part of the hospital’s central cooling system, ensuring continuous cooling for the main operating theatres, the intensive care unit, the delivery suite, as well as the communal areas, patient rooms and treatment rooms of Building “D”. Repeated leaks in the tube register of the old tower made replacement unavoidable.
Extensive preparation and a precise crane lift
The project required several months of preparation. Due to its specialised technical parameters, the cooling tower took 15 weeks to manufacture, and B+N began procurement as early as June 2025.
On-site work began early in November. The tower, consisting of two units weighing 4,770 kg combined, arrived on two lorries. The operation was preceded by traffic-management measures, including lane closures and diversions.
During the crane lift:
- A lifting height of 25 metres had to be reached,
- the crane operated with an outreach of around 30 metres,
- the unit had to be lifted over a four-metre-high sound-dampening wall,
- and it was finally positioned in the rooftop mechanical plant area with millimetre accuracy.
More than a dozen specialists took part in the operation – crane operators, logistics and construction experts, and technicians responsible for fitting the equipment on site. The six-hour procedure was carried out with close coordination throughout, ensuring the hospital’s operations were not disrupted.
