In healthcare and care environments in particular, where hygiene standards directly affect patient safety and infection prevention, maintaining consistent cleaning procedures has become an even greater operational priority. At the same time, providers are balancing staffing pressures, tighter budgets and rising expectations around compliance and accountability.
These challenges were highlighted in a recent conversation between Michelle Marshall, Editor at European Cleaning Journal, and Brodie Cook, Account Manager at Able, who noted that most organisations already have cleaning procedures in place — the real difficulty lies in maintaining consistency day after day.”

Individually, these issues may seem minor. Together, they create inconsistency — and inconsistency is where standards begin to break down.
That shift in thinking is changing how organisations define cleanliness. Managers are paying closer attention to touchpoints, workflows, accountability and whether procedures are being followed properly in practice. A cleaning process only works if it works consistently every day.
Technology should support operations — not complicate them
In the past, organisations were often attracted to systems that looked impressive during demonstrations. Today, facilities managers are becoming far more practical in their decision-making. They want technology that fits naturally into existing workflows and helps teams maintain standards more reliably.
Digital task-tracking, automated reporting and monitoring systems are increasingly popular because they improve oversight and accountability without creating unnecessary complexity.
In many cases, straightforward technology delivers better long-term results than ambitious systems that are difficult to maintain.
Chemical dosing systems are one example. Small variations in dilution, repeated over time, can affect hygiene performance, increase costs and even damage materials or textiles. Automated dosing helps remove that inconsistency while reducing waste.
Automation is also becoming more common, particularly in larger facilities where recruitment and retention remain ongoing challenges. However, there is still a misconception that technology alone can solve operational problems. In reality, poor workflows and inconsistent procedures can undermine even the most advanced systems.
Simplicity often delivers the best results
One of the biggest challenges when introducing new technology is implementation. The most successful innovations are usually the ones that solve an obvious operational problem without disrupting existing processes.
That is particularly important at a time when many organisations are simplifying procedures to support overstretched teams. Complex systems may appear innovative, but if staff cannot realistically use them during demanding shifts, consistency quickly disappears.

In cleaning operations, long-term performance is rarely driven by the most advanced technology alone, but by the ability to apply standards consistently across people, processes and environments.
