Critical cooling infrastructure serving the operating theatres at Csolnoky Ferenc Hospital in Veszprém has been successfully modernised as part of a complex engineering and logistics project. The upgrade replaces equipment that had been in continuous operation for more than 20 years, improving both reliability and energy efficiency in one of the hospital’s most critical environments.
Modernising Critical Healthcare Infrastructure
In June, the Hungarian Government announced a nationwide programme to modernise hospital cooling systems. As part of this initiative, the ageing CIAT industrial chiller, which had supplied cooling to the hospital’s central operating theatres, ventilation systems and sterile technical areas, was replaced after its condition began posing an operational reliability risk.
The new installation features a TRANE liquid chiller delivering 200 kW of cooling capacity, replacing the previous 125.2 kW unit. Alongside the increased performance, the new system offers improved energy efficiency, operates with a lower environmental impact refrigerant and produces less noise, making it well suited to healthcare environments.
Crane Lift in a Live Hospital Environment
According to the official announcement, one of the most demanding stages of the project was the removal of the existing unit and the installation of the new chiller using a crane. Carrying out such work within a fully operational hospital required meticulous planning, careful logistics and close coordination to minimise disruption to clinical services.
Following the lift, engineers completed the installation of the new equipment and flushed the associated pipework before commencing system testing. Once commissioning is complete, the upgraded cooling system will fully support the hospital’s operating theatres and sterile departments.
Coordinated Delivery
The project highlights the complexity of upgrading critical building services in occupied healthcare facilities. Specialists from LIWO Group and B+N Magyarország Kft. coordinated the engineering, operational and logistical aspects of the replacement while ensuring uninterrupted hospital operations and maintaining patient safety throughout the works.
The project also demonstrates how careful planning and collaboration enable major infrastructure upgrades to be delivered without compromising essential healthcare services.
