FM newsroom – flexoffice, ESG. Sustainability now defines how offices are designed, managed, and used. For workspace operators, ESG shapes every aspect of office life, moving far beyond mere reporting targets.
Building on this commitment to sustainability, one example is Mindspace, which has introduced a global sustainability framework, Mindspace Impact, across its portfolio of more than 50 locations worldwide.
Cutting Carbon Through Smarter Operations
According to figures published by the company in partnership with KVS Consulting, Mindspace has achieved an average 21% reduction in carbon emissions across its offices.
The improvements come from a series of practical operational changes. Air conditioning systems automatically switch off outside working hours, meeting room lights are controlled by motion sensors, and water-saving aerators reduce consumption by up to 30%. Traditional halogen lighting has also been replaced with energy-efficient LED systems.
Sustainability is also influencing office fit-outs. The company increasingly uses second-life furniture and locally sourced materials to reduce waste and lower transport emissions. During refurbishments, furniture is repurposed or sold, with proceeds donated to charity.
ESG Beyond the Building
Mindspace’s ESG strategy also includes a strong social focus. Employees across different countries regularly volunteer on projects supporting local communities, environmental initiatives, and social organisations.
In Poland, for example, teams have contributed to the Szlachetna Paczka charity initiative and supported educational care institutions in Warsaw.
Internally, the company invests in employee development through leadership training, skills programmes and international collaboration initiatives. Diversity and inclusion also remain key priorities across the business.
Why Flexible Workspaces Matter
The growth of hybrid working has increased interest in flexible offices as a sustainability solution. Rather than maintaining permanently assigned desks that are often left empty, businesses can scale workspace usage according to actual demand. This helps reduce unnecessary space, energy use and resource consumption.
Mindspace also estimates that hybrid working supported by flexible office solutions can reduce commuting-related environmental impact by around 30%.
As occupiers place greater emphasis on ESG performance, the flexible office market is increasingly being seen as part of the wider transition towards more sustainable workplaces.
